Don’t trust your electronic calendar entries for the next three weeks. The early daylight savings time change has likely made some of them one hour late.

Change the Folder Where Messages and Attachments are Saved

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software, Uncategorized at 5:09 pm by Keith

By default, when you use the Save As command to save e-mail messages and attachments in Outlook 2003, these items are saved in your My Documents folder. The path where e-mail messages and attachments are saved in Outlook 2003 by default is C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents.

You can change the location where e-mail messages and attachments are saved by adding the following registry value:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\DefaultPath

To do this, do the following:

If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Be careful or hire a professional.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  5. Type DefaultPath
  6. Double-click the DefaultPath value.
  7. In the Edit String dialog box, in the Value data box, type the path, including the drive letter, to the folder that you want to use for your Outlook saved items, and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.

Personalized Outlook Menus

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 3:19 pm by Keith

Outlook 2003 has an annoying feature where it only shows some menu options, with an icon at the bottom of the menu that you can click on to expand the menu and show all options.

To make Outlook always display the full menu: Tools > Customize > check the Always show full menus check box.

BCC/From Missing from Outlook

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 2:48 pm by Keith

In Outlook (tested in XP and 2003) you cannot add/remove the BCC and From fields with the View menu if you have Word set as your editor. To turn Word off as your editor go to Tools > Options > Mail Format > uncheck Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages.

Outlook Free/Busy Range Default

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 2:43 pm by Keith

When you are adding someone as an invitee to a meeting you’ve created you can see their free/busy time. However, you can only see two months of free/busy time. If you would like to let people see more than two months of your free/busy time you can go to Tools > Options > Calendar Options > Free/Busy Options and change the default of 2 months.

Word Document Recovery

Posted in Microsoft, Software at 2:42 pm by Keith

Here is a walkthrough for recovering a lost document in word, however if no documents appear in the Document Recovery task pane than you will be unable to recover your document.

Review the files listed in the Document Recovery task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.), and decide which to keep.

If a file has [Recovered] in the title it is usually a file that contains more recent changes than a file with [Original] in the title.

If you want to view what repairs were made to a file, point to the file in the Document Recovery task pane, click the arrow next to the file’s name, and then click Show Repairs.

If you want to review the versions that were recovered, open all of the versions and save the best one.

For each file you want to keep, point to the file in the Document Recovery task pane, click the arrow next to the file’s name, and then do one of the following:

To work with the file, click Open.

To save the file, click Save As, and then enter a name for the file. By default, the file is saved in the same folder as the original file. If you use the same name as the original file, the original is overwritten. When you see a message asking whether you want to replace the existing file (with the changes you made up to the last time you saved the file), click Yes.

When you have opened or saved all of the files you want to keep, click Close in the Document Recovery task pane.
