Windows Mobile 6

Posted in Microsoft, Phones at 5:06 pm by Keith

Microsoft announced the release of Windows Mobile 6 earlier this month. Expect to see this new operating system showing up on Motorolla Qs and Palm Treos (among others) sometime during Q2 of this year. There are lots of screen captures at Engadget. New features include:

  • Support for HTML e-mail
  • Out of Office Assistant
  • Improved e-mail, history, and contact search
  • Global address list access
  • Improved calendar
  • Improved web browser

Microsoft Corp. unveiled Windows Mobile 6, the newest version of its mobile software platform. By improving usability and adding support for Microsoft Office features previously available only on PCs, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 delivers to the small screen a familiar and rich experience that meets the needs of work and life while on the go, all with a single device.

Windows Mobile 6 delivers the ability to view e-mails in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web and SharePoint sites, which means text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, and are available from a corporate e-mail server such as Exchange Server 2007, from Web-based accounts such as Windows Live Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers. Windows Mobile 6 also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides customers with a rich set of Windows Live services. For example, now through Windows Live Messenger, people can chat with more than one person at one time, express themselves through animated figures, quickly send a file or image, or record and send voice notes. -MobileTechNews

Y2K7 pt. 3

Posted in Microsoft, Windows at 4:30 pm by Keith

Y2K7 pt 1
Y2K7 pt 2

Since the last episode of daylight savings time fun I’ve learned a couple things.

First, Microsoft’s Time Zone Data Update Tool is really crappy, and the server version is even worse. They are supposed to be releasing a new server version soon, but I’m not holding out any hope that it will be a magic fix. The tool is supposed to fix calendar entries that are incorrect during the 4 week extended DST period, but it behaves unpredictably. It moves some correct entries, moves some incorrect entries (as it should), ignores some incorrect entries, and ignores some correct entries (as it should). In short, it has the potential to create a much larger mess than it proposes to fix.

On the smart phone front there are now patches available! I’ve tested the Windows Mobile patch and it installed OK (haven’t done much testing beyond that yet). I haven’t tested the other patches but I haven’t heard about any problems. Here are links to the smart phone patches:

Another Upgrade?

Posted in Hardware, Microsoft, Windows at 3:45 pm by Keith

I rebuilt Paul’s computer about four months ago. I don’t remember the machines exact specs, but I put a 2.66 Celeron processor in it along with some new memory. I got the following from him today:

Hope all is well with you. I just wanted to check with you on my computer. It seems to be working ok, but a tad slow. Should I stay with it for a while or get a new one?

Here is my response:

Paul,

If you are OK with current computer then go with that, it should run well for quite a while. If it is slow I can send you specifications/prices for a new system. Windows Vista is out now, so if you are anxious to give that a try it is available. Windows XP will be updated/supported by Microsoft for AT LEAST another year, so there is no problem with continuing to use it.

Sorry my advice isn’t totally clear but it is really a matter of preference at this point. If you want something newer and faster let me know and I can help you out. If you are having problems with your current system I can help with that as well.

One thing to consider with your current system is whether the slowness is a result of your slow internet connection. Is it only slow for e-mail and web pages? Or is everything (Word, Excel, etc.) slow?

Keith

I would love to build a new system for him and make some money but I have a feeling that Word, Outlook, and Firefox (the only programs he really uses) will run at about the same speed on a new computer. The real problem at this point is his dial-up connection, but I told him that four months ago.

Personalized Outlook Menus

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 3:19 pm by Keith

Outlook 2003 has an annoying feature where it only shows some menu options, with an icon at the bottom of the menu that you can click on to expand the menu and show all options.

To make Outlook always display the full menu: Tools > Customize > check the Always show full menus check box.

BCC/From Missing from Outlook

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 2:48 pm by Keith

In Outlook (tested in XP and 2003) you cannot add/remove the BCC and From fields with the View menu if you have Word set as your editor. To turn Word off as your editor go to Tools > Options > Mail Format > uncheck Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages.

Internet Explorer Auto Complete Settings

Posted in Microsoft at 2:46 pm by Keith

In Internet Explorer you can configure AutoComplete to save and suggest only the information you want. You can choose whether to use AutoComplete for Web addresses, forms, and passwords, or not use it all. You can also clear the history for any of these.

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Content tab.
Under Personal information, click AutoComplete (IE 6) or click the Settings button in the AutoComplete section (IE 7).
Select the check boxes for the AutoComplete options you want to use.
Click OK.

Outlook Free/Busy Range Default

Posted in Email, Microsoft, Software at 2:43 pm by Keith

When you are adding someone as an invitee to a meeting you’ve created you can see their free/busy time. However, you can only see two months of free/busy time. If you would like to let people see more than two months of your free/busy time you can go to Tools > Options > Calendar Options > Free/Busy Options and change the default of 2 months.

Word Document Recovery

Posted in Microsoft, Software at 2:42 pm by Keith

Here is a walkthrough for recovering a lost document in word, however if no documents appear in the Document Recovery task pane than you will be unable to recover your document.

Review the files listed in the Document Recovery task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.), and decide which to keep.

If a file has [Recovered] in the title it is usually a file that contains more recent changes than a file with [Original] in the title.

If you want to view what repairs were made to a file, point to the file in the Document Recovery task pane, click the arrow next to the file’s name, and then click Show Repairs.

If you want to review the versions that were recovered, open all of the versions and save the best one.

For each file you want to keep, point to the file in the Document Recovery task pane, click the arrow next to the file’s name, and then do one of the following:

To work with the file, click Open.

To save the file, click Save As, and then enter a name for the file. By default, the file is saved in the same folder as the original file. If you use the same name as the original file, the original is overwritten. When you see a message asking whether you want to replace the existing file (with the changes you made up to the last time you saved the file), click Yes.

When you have opened or saved all of the files you want to keep, click Close in the Document Recovery task pane.
